Farid, a 42-year-old Moroccan man, is preparing a birthday celebration for his daughter Hadiyah, together with his son Hamid. Child welfare worker Kari unexpectedly arrives to observe Farid with the children for the day. Farid is reluctant to cooperate, but eventually gives in and tries to make the best of the situation. When his Moroccan family suddenly shows up, cultural misunderstandings, language barriers, and differing expectations of what a Norwegian/Moroccan birthday celebration should look like begin to arise. The tension between Farid and Kari gradually increases, reaching a climax when Hajar refuses to wear the traditional Moroccan dress she received as a gift from Farid. Kari gets involved, helping Hajar out of the dress, which offends and humiliates Farid in front of his family. In the end, Farid stands up for himself and his culture, despite the potentially damaging consequences it may have on his case to retain custody of his children.
